When you watch Auburn University football games online, you’ll be catching some of the strongest football action found in the SEC (Southeastern Conference) The Auburn Tigers have a long, storied football tradition beginning in 1892. It was then that a Latin language and history professor, George Petrie, put together the very first university football team while also acting as coach. In fact, Auburn played its inaugural game with the University of Georgia. Piedmont Park in Atlanta was the game site. Petrie served only a year taking the team to a 2-2 record. During the next eight years, Auburn would be guided by five different coaches.
The Tigers joined the Southeastern Conference in 1933. Today, Auburn has claimed six conference (SEC) championships. After SEC split into two divisions in 1992 (West and East), Auburn has earned three division championships playing in the West. Auburn won two conference championships, in 2004 and the other in 2010, both years in which the Tigers went undefeated. Although an SEC conference title winner with an undefeated record, the Tigers were denied the chance to competefor the national title by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 2005.
The Tigers play home games on the campus of Auburn University in the Jordan-Hare stadium. This playing facility is named after Ralph “Shug” Jordan, who is the all-time winning over football coach and after Cliff Hare, who was a member of the university’s first football team. Prior to 1973, the Tigers played at Auburn Stadium from 1939 to 1949. A new stadium, the Cliff Hare Stadium, was home from 1949 to 1973. A new facility with a seating capacity of 87,451 was opening 73 and christened the Jordan-Hare Stadium and is today considered one of the top 10 largest on-campus stadiums in the NCAA (National College Athletic Association).
Auburn holds the 12th ranking as the most winning program in college football history compiling more than 700 victories.
